Auto Responders

Sparrow replies automatically when a message matches a phrase you set. Use it for questions people ask all the time, like the server IP or where the rules are.

Setting it up

  1. Open Auto Responders in the dashboard and press + Create Auto Responder.
  2. On the Trigger tab, give it a name, add the phrases to listen for, and pick a match type.
  3. On the Reply tab, write the reply.
  4. Optionally, use Where & when to limit channels and roles or add a cooldown.
  5. Press Save Changes. Changes reach the bot within 30 seconds.

To check a phrase before saving, type an example message in the Try it box on the Trigger tab. It tells you whether that message would get a reply, using the same rules as the bot.

Phrases and match types

Add up to 20 phrases, each up to 100 characters. Any one of them is enough. Matching ignores capital letters and extra spaces.

Match typeWhat it does
Whole word (default)Matches the phrase as its own word. ip matches “what's the ip?” but not “ship”.
AnywhereMatches the phrase anywhere, even inside another word. ip also matches “ship”.
Exact messageThe whole message must be the phrase. Punctuation at the end is ignored, so “rules?” matches rules.
Starts withThe message must start with the phrase.

When more than one matches

A message only ever gets one reply. Sparrow checks your auto responders from the top of the list and the first one that matches replies. Drag them in the list to change the order.

If the first match isn't allowed in that channel or for that member's roles, the next one is checked. If the first match is on cooldown, nothing replies.

The reply

Choose Text for a plain message, Embed, or Components V2. Text replies can have more versions with More replies(one extra free, up to 10 with Premium), and Sparrow picks one at random each time.

These placeholders are filled in when the reply is sent:

PlaceholderBecomes
{user}A mention of the member. With Notify them off, their name in bold.
{username}Their username.
{displayname}Their server nickname, or their name.
{channel}The channel they posted in.
{server}The server name.
{membercount}The server's member count.
{avatar}Their avatar. Use it as an image or thumbnail.
{servericon}The server icon. Use it as an image or thumbnail.

They work in the same places as in Welcome & Goodbye. {channel} only works in Auto Responders.

Reply options

OptionWhat it does
Reply to their messageSends the reply as a Discord reply to their message. Off sends it as a normal message.
Notify themPings the member. If the reply is a normal message, Sparrow adds the mention at the start unless the text already has {user}. @everyone, @here and roles are never pinged.
Delete their messageDeletes the message that set it off. The reply is then sent as a normal message. Sparrow needs Manage Messages in that channel.
React to their messageAdds up to 3 reactions to their message. Sparrow needs Add Reactions. Skipped if their message is deleted.
Delete the reply after (Premium)Deletes Sparrow's reply after 15 seconds to 7 days. Can run up to 15 seconds late.
Delete the previous reply (Premium)When it replies again in the same channel, its last reply there is deleted, so only the newest answer stays.

Where and when

SettingWhat it does
Allowed channelsEmpty means all channels. Threads count as their parent channel.
Ignored channelsSparrow never replies in these channels.
Allowed rolesEmpty means everyone. Otherwise members need one of these roles, or all of them if you pick Needs all of them.
Ignored rolesMembers with these roles never get a reply.
Member cooldownTime before the same member can set it off again, up to 24 hours.
Channel cooldownTime before it replies again in the same channel, whoever asks. Up to 24 hours.

If a channel or role is in both lists, the ignored list wins.

Good to know

  • Messages from bots and webhooks never get a reply, so two bots can't reply to each other forever.
  • Sparrow needs View Channel and Send Messages in the channel to reply.
  • If a reply can't be sent, the list shows Last reply failed with the reason, like a missing permission. It clears after the next reply that works.

Free servers & Premium

Free servers can have 10 auto responders, each with 1 extra reply. Premium has no limit, allows up to 10 extra replies, and adds Delete the reply after and Delete the previous reply.
