Logs
Logs posts what happens in your server to a channel you pick: deleted and edited messages, members joining and leaving, bans, role and channel changes, and more. Staff can see what happened and who did it. Logs is free for every server.
Setting it up
- Create a private channel for logs in Discord, like #logs, that only staff can see.
- Open Logs in the dashboard. It's under Server.
- Turn on Post logs and pick your Log channel.
- Press Save Changes. Logs start within about 30 seconds.
That's all you need. Everything is logged to that one channel until you change it.
What to log
Events come in groups. Each group has a switch, so you can turn off a whole group, like Voice. Open a group to turn single events on or off.
| Group | Events |
|---|---|
| Messages | Message deleted, Message edited, Messages deleted in bulk, Message pinned or unpinned. |
| Members | Member joined, Member left, Member kicked, Member banned, Member unbanned, Member timed out or timeout removed, Member roles changed, Nickname changed. |
| Roles | Role created, Role deleted, Role changed. |
| Channels | Channel created, Channel deleted, Channel changed, Channel permissions changed. |
| Server | Server settings changed, Bot added. |
| Voice | Joined a voice channel, Left a voice channel, Moved voice channel. Leaving or moving says how long they stayed. |
| Invites | Invite created, Invite deleted. |
| Emoji & Stickers | Emoji added, Emoji deleted, Emoji renamed, Sticker added, Sticker deleted, Sticker changed. |
| Threads | Thread created, Thread deleted, Thread changed. |
| Scheduled Events | Event created, Event deleted, Event changed. |
| Leveling | XP changed by staff: who changed whose XP with /xp or /level, before and after, and the reason. |
Using more than one channel
Want message logs in one channel and member logs in another? Give a group its own channel. You can also give a single event its own channel, like bans in #mod-log.
Sparrow picks the channel in this order: the event's own channel, then its group's channel, then the main Log channel. Press × next to a channel to go back to the one above.
Ignoring channels and roles
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ignore these channels | Nothing that happens in them is logged. Pick a category to ignore every channel in it. |
| Ignore these roles | Nothing members with these roles do is logged. Useful for staff or trusted bots. |
| Ignore bots | On by default. Skips messages, voice activity and threads from bots. |
Sparrow never logs its own messages, or anything that happens in a log channel.
Other options
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Show who did it | Shows who deleted a channel, banned someone, changed a role and so on. If someone deleted their own message, it says the author. Needs the View Audit Log permission. |
| Show IDs | Adds user, channel and role IDs to the bottom of each log. |
| Show roles when a member leaves | Lists the roles a member had when they left. |
| Colors | Open a group to change the color of any event's log. Created is green, deleted is red and changed is yellow until you pick your own. Reset puts it back. |
Good to know
- Sparrow needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in each log channel, and View Audit Log to show who did things. Without View Audit Log, kicks show up as members leaving. The dashboard warns you if it's missing.
- Discord doesn't tell bots what a deleted message said. Sparrow remembers recent messages so it can show them. Messages sent before Sparrow last started show as not available.
- When many messages are deleted at once, the log comes with a text file of the ones Sparrow saw.
- Logs never ping anyone, even when they mention someone.
- If a log can't be posted, the Logs page shows why, like a deleted channel or a missing permission.
- Some modules have their own log channel too, like Persistent Roles and Server Tag Role.
