Auto Roles
Auto Roles gives roles without anyone clicking anything. It has two parts, each on its own tab with its own switch:
- Join Roles gives roles to new members and to bots when they join.
- Persistent Roles gives members their roles back when they leave and rejoin.
Join Roles
- Open Auto Roles in the dashboard. It opens on the Join Roles tab.
- Turn on Give roles when someone joins.
- Pick the Roles for new members, and Roles for bots if you want bots to get a role too.
- Press Save Changes.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Roles for new members | Given to every person who joins. |
| Roles for bots | Given to bots when they're added. Bots get them right away and skip the options below. |
| Wait before giving them | Waits this long after someone joins. Use seconds, minutes, hours or days, up to 7 days. 0 gives them right away. |
| Wait until they accept the rules | Waits until the member agrees to the server rules. See below. |
| Skip members who get roles back | On by default. If Persistent Roles gives someone their roles back, they don't get join roles as well. |
Waiting for the rules
If your server uses Discord's Rules Screening, new members have to agree to the rules before they can talk. Giving them a role before that lets them skip the rules, so turn on Wait until they accept the rules and Sparrow waits until they agree.
If you also set a wait, both have to happen. For example, with 10 minutes and the rules, someone who agrees after 2 minutes gets their roles at 10 minutes. The dashboard tells you if Rules Screening is off in your server, since then nobody has to wait for it.
Waiting members are saved, so a Sparrow restart doesn't lose anyone. If someone leaves before the wait is over, they're skipped. The tab shows how many members are waiting.
Persistent Roles
Discord doesn't keep a member's roles when they leave. Persistent Roles keeps a copy while they're in the server, and gives the roles back if they rejoin.
- Open the Persistent Roles tab and turn on Give roles back when members rejoin.
- Choose which roles come back (see below).
- Press Save Changes. Sparrow saves everyone's current roles within about 15 seconds.
Only members who leave after it's turned on can get roles back, since Sparrow doesn't know what roles people had before that.
Which roles come back
| Choice | What comes back |
|---|---|
| All roles except these | Every role they had, except the ones you block. Block admin and staff roles here. This is the default. |
| Only these roles | Only the roles you pick, if they had them. |
The dashboard warns you if a role with powerful permissions, like Administrator or Ban Members, would come back. These never come back: temporary roles, roles above Sparrow's highest role, and roles Discord or other bots manage, like Server Booster.
Other options
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Keep roles for | How long after someone leaves their roles are kept. 30 days by default. After that they're deleted. |
| Log channel | Optional. Sparrow posts there when it gives roles back, and when a role couldn't be given. The post never pings anyone. |
Turning Persistent Roles off deletes every saved role for the server.
Good to know
- Sparrow needs Manage Roles, and its own role has to be above every role it gives. Move it higher in Server Settings > Roles.
- If a role can't be given, the tab shows a ! and the reason, like a missing permission.
- Want a role for members who show your server tag? That's Server Tag Role.
