Reaction Roles
Post a message that gives members roles when they click a button, pick from a dropdown or add a reaction. You can use all three on one message. Everything is built and posted from the dashboard. There are no commands.
Setting it up
- Open Reaction Roles in the dashboard and press Create, and give the panel a name. Members don't see the name.
- On the Message tab, build an Embed or Components message.
- On the Roles tab, add buttons, dropdowns or reactions and give each one a role.
- Optionally, set who can use it on the Access tab.
- Press Post and choose a channel.
Sparrow needs View Channel, Send Messages and Manage Roles. Its own role must also be above every role the panel gives out. Discord requires this for every bot. A panel with reactions also needs Add Reactions and Manage Messages in its channel, to add the reactions and take members' reactions off. The dashboard warns you when you post if either is missing.
The message
Choose Embeds or Components, Discord's newer layout made of blocks (see the Messages docs). Switching between them starts the message over, since the two don't share content. Buttons and dropdowns go below the message content in their own rows.
Buttons, Dropdowns, and Reactions
The Roles tab has three sections. Buttons and Reactions are each one group. Dropdowns can have several separate dropdowns, each with its own placeholder text and options. Add one with + Add Another Dropdown.
| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Toggle | Adds or removes the role each time it's used. On a dropdown, a member can pick any number of its options at once. |
| Exclusive | A member can have only one role from the group. Picking one removes the other. On reactions, it also takes the other reaction off. |
| Remove on click | Reactions only. Adds or removes the role, then removes the member's reaction so the message doesn't fill up with reactions. |
Each button, reaction or dropdown option can give more than one role. Up to 3 are free. More than 3 need Premium.
Limits
| Limit | Why |
|---|---|
| 25 options in a dropdown, 25 items in the Buttons or Reactions section | Discord allows 25 options in a dropdown. Sparrow uses the same limit for buttons and reactions. |
| 10 roles per button, dropdown option or reaction | The first role on each is free. More needs Premium. |
| 20 reactions on one panel | Discord allows 20 different reactions on a message. This counts every reaction on the panel. |
| 5 rows of buttons and dropdowns | Discord's limit for one message. The dashboard tells you what to remove if a panel goes over. |
A role at or above Sparrow's highest role shows a Missing Bot Permissions warning on the Roles tab. You can still save it, then move Sparrow's role up in Server Settings → Roles.
Access
Allowed roles: if set, a member needs one of these to use the panel, or all of them if you pick Needs all of them. Blocked roles are checked first. A member with a blocked role can't use the panel, even if they have an allowed role. The first 3 roles in each list are free. More needs Premium.
Working with Temporary Roles
If a role here is also set up as a Temporary Role, it's removed after its duration when picked from this panel too. There's nothing extra to set up. Un-picking it, switching to another Exclusive option, or losing the role any other way cancels the timer.
Turning a panel off
Switch off Panel Enabled on the Message tab to pause a panel without removing it. Sparrow asks for a message, like "Role picking is closed right now." Members who use a button or dropdown see it, and only they can. Leave it empty and they see "This panel is closed right now." Discord doesn't let Sparrow reply to a reaction, so a new reaction is taken back off and no role changes.
When something goes wrong
If a member's pick doesn't fully work, for example a role is above Sparrow's or Sparrow can't take a reaction off, the panel shows Problem in the list and the reason at the top of its page. It clears the next time a member uses the panel without a problem.
Managing a posted panel
- Saving changes to a panel updates the posted message.
- A panel can be posted in more than one channel. Each post is updated.
- Deleting a panel can also remove the message it posted, if you choose to when confirming.
